The Worst is an ongoing series of process based paintings that intentionally reject traditional ideas of composition, symbolism and image making.
After hearing an artist talk about how deep and personal their non objective paintings are, I was moved by how egotistical and vapid paintings can be. I honestly believe that non object paintings have the potential to be some of the worst paintings ever made on every possible level.
Inspired while preparing a CPPP canvas to paint on, I liked how the stretched, gessoed, textured and colored ground looked before committing any images. This started the first “Worst” painting experiment in spring of 2026. These works are created using found wood materials I gather from the neighborhood surrounding my studio. No traditional painting technics are used. Paint, mediums, solvents, saw dust, dirt, spit, wine, rubbing alcohol, oil, coffee and whatever else is around are applied by gloved hands and sanded and wiped off and reapplied multiple times. Marks are made with closed eyes. Consciousness is avoided as much as possible or hidden from view.
The final works are more objects than paintings earning them the series title of The Worst. They are about process and concept. Giving the viewer very little direction, they encourage slow and investigative looking. The longer they are observed, the more that is revealed.
