Tattoo Classes for anyone interested in the art of tattooing.
Each month I am hosting tattoo classes for anyone who is interested in exploring the art of tattooing. These classes are designed to be relevant for anyone at any level of tattoo or art experience. If you are new to art or have been tattooing for years, these classes will help you advance and level up your skills and knowledge. We will focus on building better designs and learn the fundamentals of tattooing. I believe that every good tattoo must start with a great design, so these classes focus on the art behind each tattoo.
The curriculum changes each month. The lessons and activities students participate in changes each month too.
Students of all levels are encouraged to take these classes. Unlike the traditional Apprentice/Master way of learning to tattoo, there is no gatekeeping here. You do not need to submit a portfolio or have any prior tattoo experience to participate. I really want anyone interested in the art of tattooing and how to create better works of art to take these classes and grow as artists and individuals. I believe the world is a better place with your art in it.
No tattooing on humans will be performed by any of the students
You must be 18 to attend.
The focus of this month’s class will cycle through four of the major tattoo styles, those being American traditional, Japanese, black work decorative and realism. Each week we will start with a lecture about the style we are focusing on. We will look at some examples from that style and a random selection that point out the major characteristics that define each style of the tattooing. We will also discuss the cultural significance of that particular genre and era of tattooing. What it means historically. What it meant, socially or politically. We will look at some examples and discuss the key features of these and how did the artist go about designing them. We will have a drawing assignment each week and also homework assignments each week. At the beginning of each class we will take a look at everything we’ve drawn and have a critique to talk about it. Being able to talk about our art is a very important part of being an artist.
The focus of this month’s class is on watercolor tattooing. The entire month we will learn about how I personally go about designing and executing tattoos. We will learn about different paint mediums and how to use technology while working on our designs. This is going to be a fun month. At the first class we will have a raffle for any of the students interested in getting a small tattoo during class for a demo the following week. This will also helps the class to learn more about the tattoo experience and see each week how the healing process progresses. Each week we will look at different artists work that I admire and study how they compose their work. There will be in-class design and art assignments each week. Of course there’s home work too. This month will be full of freedom and artistic exploration as we try new things and learn new skills. Let’s make a mess and then try to make sense of it. :)
The focus of this month’s class will be technical aspects of tattooing. This will include learning about blood born pathogens and sanitary work habits, how to set up and break down/clean a tattoo station, learn about tattoo machines and needles and also discuss shop presentation. We will learn about stencils and how to prepare your client for their new tattoo. We will delve into the art of performing the tattoo and providing a unique and memorably experience for your clients. This month we will also explore the importance of social media and internet presence. Student are encouraged to purchase or bring with them any rotary tattoo machine they have during this month to work on practice synthetic skin. Each week we will open the class with a discussion and critique followed by in-class work assignments. Students with have homework each week in the form of design assignments and other projects. Tattooing is an experience.
